Historic Jacksonville Inc
Presents Season Four of

Pioneer History in Story and Song - with David Gordon

Naversen Room, Jacksonville Library (free parking)
340 West "C" Street, Jacksonville, Oregon 97530 MAPLink

After 26 sold-out performances in 2016, 2017 and 2018, troubadour David Gordon returns by popular demand in 2019 with his most-requested program (The Life of Stephen Foster) and three new themes: Victorians in Love, Songs to Lighten the Journey, and Songs of Hardship and Hope.

Each 1-hour show includes 8 to 10 songs originally popular in the middle of the 19th century. The narration interweaves the songs, gives them historical context, and helps us to connect with them and our 19th century heritage.

These events are intimate, casual, fun, and filled with memorable music and fascinating historical background. David's combination of colorful music and true stories ignites the imagination, and brings life to history.

All ticket proceeds benefit Historic Jacksonville Inc.

(Each program is performed at 1:30pm and again at 3:00pm)

SUNDAY, JANUARY 13
Special Encore: Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts

David's Stephen Foster presentation, back by popular demand!

Stephen Foster was the first American freelance composer, and the most famous American songwriter of the 19th Century, but he died alone and penniless at the age of 37. David tells the story of Foster's brief life, and how he sought to escape the world of the blackface minstrels and create a new kind of American song.

During the narration, David will sing twelve Foster songs, including Open Thy Lattice, Love; Oh, Susanna; Camptown Races; Swanee River (Old Folks at Home); My Old Kentucky Home; Hard Times Come Again No More; Some Folks; Beautiful Dreamer; If You Only Have a Moustache; and more.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10
Victorians in Love
(and Occasionally Loss)

Love songs have been popular since the beginning of time: songs of romantic love, lost love, unrequited love, motherly love, and love in every other form. In honor of Valentine's Day, David has chosen a bouquet of songs - happy, sad, and silly. Some were written by America's earliest women composers.

Songs will include: Let Me Call You Sweetheart, the original version of Rock-A-Bye Baby, Don't Marry a Man If He Drinks, Love's Old Sweet Song, Courting in the Rain, and more.

SUNDAY, MARCH 10
Songs to Lighten the Journey

The 19th Century on the Move

Travel in the mid-19th century was not for the fait of heart. On stagecoaches, wagons, riverboats and ocean-going ships, a journey was full of danger and adventure. In this program you will hear songs the pioneers heard as they made their way west, and songs about the perilous journey.

Songs will include: Wait For The Wagon, Erie Canal, The California Stage, The Boatman Dance, One More River To Cross, plus sea shanties and David's hilarious Oregon Place Names Song.

SUNDAY, APRIL 14
Songs of Hardship and Hope

Songs sometimes speak from the experience of struggle, and sometimes offer comfort and strength to those in need. In this concert David reaches beyond the mid 19th century into modern times for some iconic songs of lament and yearning, including: Home Sweet Home, Brother Can You Spare A Dime, Kilkelly Ireland, Listen To The Mockingbird, Nearer My God To Thee, Aragon Mill, and more.
